The opening game saw us being beaten by La Salle by more than twenty points. The team being helmed by first time coach in training Chito Narvasa and veteran trainer Cary Sevilla hasn't gelled yet. The first round was forgettable with La Salle sweeping all their other games against Notre Dame, Marist and St. Jude. The team continued its back-to-basics program and started to win other games.

The first game of the second round was against La Salle in their Siopao dome. The team played well but experience of the Opponents still saw them through. We lost by ten. But, number 10, Alan Cruz, was wearing the wrong uniform! Coach Chito places the game under technical protest. The team went on to win the remaining games of the second round. So did La Salle. When it was time to review the protest, the committee awarded the game in favor of the Ateneo. Rubber match! One game championship! The coaching staff scouted the other team and we, in turn practiced the 2-2-1 full court press.

Game time! I couldn't remeber how the rest of the game went but we were behind by seven with 1 minute and 15 seconds to go. Time to execute the 2-2-1 full court press. We stole and at 45 seconds to go we were just behind by 5. I remeber the whole La Salle bench cheering and celebrating already. Again and again and again, the full court press worked! And with a few seconds left, We found ourselves leading by one. The La Salle goes to their sharp shooter Dy. He was fouled with about two seconds left. He sinks in only the second of his free throw. The ball game goes into overtime! The whole La salle bench and their followers are stunned and the Ateneo bench is now celebrating! We went on to win this one with a four point margin!

Animo Ateneo beat La Salle!

Remorseful Roma

Just playing around...

Finally, Nude...

I've been wanting to shoot the female body. It still leaves that empty feeling in the gut when I think about it but I have to admit that this series is one of the best that I have seen eversince I started watching the games way back in the sixties. This is very much at par with the 2002 series and that winning moment of Chito Narvasa in his junior days at the NCAA. A lot af people agree that it could have gone in any way. It was the breaks of the game. UST came out the victors and it was a well deserved win. Take advantage of the empty roads and go to places where you wouldn't even think of visiting on ordinary weekends. Yeah, baby!

The idea came about when Al told me that she had to do some things in Pasig. I wanted to ride so I asked Nacio if he wanted to join me. To my surprise, he said yes. Done deal. I told him that we were off to Macapagal where we might be able to find a pair of bargain badminton shoes. He became more excited.

The roads were really empty. We took the Libis, C-5, Fort, Buendia route. Sarap! there were hardly any cars on the roads. We were there in like 45 minutes. We were about to stop in Blu-Wave but the humongous SM MoA stared at us. We decided to go and we were overwhelmed by its size. We stopped at the Ocean side. Seattle's Best was open so we had a couple of drinks and Nacio ordered a ham and cheese croissant. We decided to wait for the mall to open. When it was almost 12 noon, we rode Pilar again so that we can park inside. Once inside, Nacio and I strolled and ended in the iMax theater. Open Season 3D was showing and we decided to watch. It was ok and, good for me, the 3D glasses worked fine. Galing! After the show, we hunted for Al's black Chucks, got Roma a spoof shirt and headed for Blu-Wave for Nacio's badminton shoes. We were able to get a pair of Victors with a 20% discount. Not bad...

We were heading for home when our stomachs started grumbling. It was 3pm and we haven't had lunch. We rode around the Fort for a nice place to eat but there was nothing that suited our fancy. And then I remembered the House of Minis in C-5. Two hungry guys, steaks, cold drinks, perfect! We ordered portehouses and gobbled it up. Nacio was satisfied and so was I. With our full stomachs, we got onto Pilar and rode home. We even had a fly-by over at the park to end this wonderful ride.

What a nice day with Nacio. I felt a little off and decided to take my temperature. 39.9 degrees the thermometer read! I dismissed it as the flu and took paracetamol. What was funny was hat the fever wasn't going away even with super doses of Biogesic. The thermometer read 39.7-39.9 constantly. Decided to get a complete blood count (cbc) and the results read a 167 platelet count––well within the means of the 150-400 normal count. The bad thing was I had to go to Tanay for a location check that Thursday. My fever was down to 38 so I decided to push through with the location. When I got home, my fever was back to 39.9. was what I had in mind. My fever was constant still at 39.9 and I wasn't perspiring at all. The heat was all inside and I felt really bad! I decided to get another platelet count the following day and it was way down to 67! The doctors I have been talking to (Jojo Hosaka and Manjo Ruiz), started to panick. They kept on asking if I had bleedings already. I wasn't but decided to have myself confined already. Thanks to Bukay Urra Lagman, I was able to get a room in Medical City. I checked in at about 7:30 PM, Sept. 22.

This is the view from my room.

My potasium enriched IV that was attached to me for four days.

I went out the following tuesday. The only good thing was I was still able to watch Game 1 of the Ateneo-UST UAAP championship games. Ateneo won!

I'd like to thank Father for my wife who took very good care of me during the whole time, Yaya Luz who stayed with me in the hospital, Mama and Gab, Bukay, Luigi, Yayan, Ina, my sisters, my friends from Victory and everyone who wished me well during the whole bout. Praise you, Lord for keeping me safe and well.

Man, dengue was so bad. I will always stick to take off...This is the familiar phrase when a group of riders talk about a Sunday ride. And we did just that last Sunday, August 27 2k6, 6:30 am. A group of twenty one riders took off from Shell, C-5, Julio Vargas to have the very first Vespinoy Introductory Ride. We headed for Lucban, Quezon to have its famous longganisa and pancit habhab for breakfast. We were then met up by two more riders from San Pablo at Fami, Laguna. The ride was a bit wet due to rains but this didn't dampen the group's collective spirit to go on with the ride. Rain or storm was the motto of the ride. The skies cleared up while we were enjoying the breakfast hosted by DMD888 aka Dennis. Soon after, everyone suited up already for the ride back home. It was a nice quick ride where we were only hassled by a disconnected throttle linkage and two flat tires.

All-in-all, the group travelled 263 kms. Great ride, guys. Galing! Saan tayo sa susunod? Tee-off or take-off? He was using it as his daily timepiece and one day I noticed that he was back using his old Rolex all-steel Oyster Precision. I remember asking him where the pocketwatch was and he brought it out and said he dropped it and has been deemed irrepairable by a a watch repair shop in Escolta. It was in bad shape. The hands were all mangled and the glass cover cracked and separated from the watch already. That was that and the watch was put aside in the family safe to be forgotten. This was back in the early 70's.

Just last year, my wife was gifted with a pocket watch by my mother-in-law who visited Switzerland. For some reason, I remembered the watch that my father used when I was a kid. I gave my dad, who is now 87, a call and asked about it. He said it was in the safe. I asked him if I could have a look and he reminded me of the shape it was in. I went to my dad's house and looked at it. Boy, was it in bad shape! As I mentioned, the hands were mangled and the glass cracked and separated from the watch already. I took it home and started to tinker around with it. I started to wind it and I was shocked to hear a ticking sound! I looked at the second hand and it was moving! It was alive!!! I was staring at it in disbelief and my heart sank when I saw the hour and minute hands cut and bent out of shape. I placved some calls to some watch collector friends and was directed to call a schoolmate from the Ateneo, Rani Jalandoni, who had to study watchmaking to maintain his over 300 pieces of Omega collection. I brought it to him and he was amazed at the condition of this over 90 year old time piece. He said that it didn't even have to be taken apart for cleaning and all it needed was dusting. He replaced the hands with what he had and got a new glass cover for it.

The pocket is an 18K solid gold, 21 jewel Howard Pocketwatch (photos attached). It was built sometime between the 1900's and the 1930's when the company was still in existence. My dream now is to be able to bring it back to its original state–hands and the glass cover. Thanks to PenManila, I now have a place where they might know where I can have this done. Salamat po, Mr. Butch.

True Love Never Dies

Oh, man. Isn't it funny? There comes a time when you think that you have totally given up something and have moved on. This happened to me when I decided to sell Maggi, my Piaggio X9 Amalfi. I really thought I have given up scootering. The thinking was I can't risk myself anymore since the two kids are fast growing up and I can't afford any injuries and all. In fact, in exchange for the scooter, I acquired a nice vintage car which I featured in this blog too. I enjoyed Allie too. After some minor fix-ups, I was able to make her road worthy again. In fact for the past month, because of the house renovation, I have been using her as a daily drive with no hitches at all. Iba talaga ang Benz. BUT...

The itch started to itch again. The call of having a wasp suddenly started again. A few calls to Cliff and a deal was done. It was a little bit uncertain at first since Cliff didn't want to let go of the green one. There was even a time when he retracted on the deal since he felt bad about a deal that he made with another party. But Cliff, being a man of his word, realized that he is above that and gave me a call. The deal was sealed and I am now the proud owner of PILAR, a 2002 Vespa PX200 with only 2400kms logged. She is still brand new! A few quich fix-ups and Pilar is as sweet as she can be. Here she is, my sweet. sweet Pilar.

Why Pilar? Her batch from Assumption came in full force to give support to Pilar, Ting and their kids. It was a night of dancing, drinking and just seeing old friends to the songs of the eighties. It was nice to see everyone just having a good time.

Pilar was in high spirits and didn't look like she was ill. There were emotional moments like the AVP and her classmates just hugging her everytime they saw her. LABAN! was that night's battle cry.

Father God, I pray for my friend Pilar. May you give her the graces to fight the terrible illness that she has. Is is because they bring back good memories of certain moments? Is it because we all know that the quality of things made from way back when is better than the things made now? I'm sure there are different reasons for different people. As for me, it's a mixture of different reasons why these old things are so likeable.

Look at the present day Vespa. It's design is basically post-WW II. Look at it closely and you will see that it was designed for a specific purpose which was to be able to travel along the war-torn streets of Italy. The parts of the first Vespa were salvaged from plane parts thus dictating the design. The parts were there first so the design accomodated the parts and not the other way around. If you look at its design, its nothing compared to the design of the modern scooters but I, together with a lot of wasp-riding friends, find a different charm to it. Then there's the reliability issue. Again, I , together with my wasp-riding friends, would tell anyone interested in getting one is to go for it since once you get a Vespa running, it would almost be impossible to run it down. Think bullet-proof. Except for extreme abuse, I think the Vespa could withstand the daily abuse of a metro ride plus more easily. The club I belong to, Euroscoot, is a group of guys who have Vespas as their daily commutes and they will attest to this. Aside from the daily scooting, these Vespas have travelled as far as Bicol down south and Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte up north. Isn't that something for a post WW II designed scooter? I have owned three Vespas and my love affair with this thing will never end.

I have also recently acquired a 1978 Mercedes Benz W123 200G. For a lot of other people, it's a major headache on four wheels. Because of the different comments I heard from my friends, I was hesitant to try to bring this old piece of fine machinery back to its glorious form. The first time I saw it, I found that there wasn't much to do in terms of its exterior. Except for a little crumple on the chrome moulding of the rear passenger door, a little bit of rust bumps under the rear bumper, a little bit of fading on some of the doors, there wasn't much work needed. The moulding has been replaced with a brand new one from Delodur.

These are the things that I have done to it since the day I got it. I replaced the retracting antennae already. Had the rear board replaced. I was also able to complete the knobs inside. With some flat black spray pain, I was also able to make the boot look pristine. And thanks to Sunshine Motors, I was able to buy an original carpet matt for the luggage compartment. With some research, I was able to find an ewd with mounting clips over the internet. I was also able to find an instrument cluster thus making all my guages operational. All the instrument knobs are lighting once again and all the bulbs in the rear and in front are all lighting up. The brakes have been overhauled and are working perfectly. It has been tuned and timed thus eliminating the overheating problem that I once encountered. The leak of the fuel pump has stopped since I replaced it with a brand new one. All the belts are new. I also replaced the wiper intermittent switch relay so the wipers don't go haywire anymore. There are still a bit of things to be done but those can wait for the moment.

What's interesting is that the lighter is working and it still has the original airconditioning unit which is working fine even during these summer months. The dash has a little bit of cracks but for a car its age its forgivable. The tires are mounted on steel rims and sport hub caps. I've been deciding if I should get alloy wheels but the ones that the car has know really makes it look like a classic so I think that these stay.

My wife couldn't understand the time and the passion that I have given this car. She always asks me why I spend time and money on it. All I could say is that it brings me joy to see a 28 year old car running the way it is after 28 years of existence. It was made when bell-bottomed pants were in vogue for the first time, when Sergio Mendez first visited Manila for a benefit show for the construction of the Philippine Heart Center, when I was a senior in High School at the Ateneo, when life was much simpler. I look at the car which is now running well and it gives me hope that everything will be okay. I know that there would be problems with it but with a little of time, patience and love, just like with everything else, it would purr and would be fine again.

From scooters, a car then watches...this is another story. Abangan...

Weekend Getaway

Wow! Just came back from a four day vacation and am I relaxed! The four of us, Al, Roma, Nacio and myself plus yaya Rose, just had a 4 day stay at La Luz Resort owned by Rommel Marasigan. This was our second time to visit the place and we still enjoyed it. There's something about this place that just makes you feel good. The sea, the wind blowing through the cabanas, the cozy rooms, the friendly staff, the well prepared food and a lot more combined together make for a good vaction. Aren't we just so blessed to have this time together? Thank You, Lord, for making all these possible.

The kids found a new way to while the time away and this was through snorkelling. They just had their first encounter with marine life and they were so amazed. They saw different types of fish and corals live! It wasn't inside some screen and some of the fish were aggressive enough to get a nibble from you. Galing!

Can't wait for our next out-of-town-trip. Everyday we are given so much choices and since we are responsible beings (sabi nila...), we have to discern between what we want and what we need. Why is it that the things that we want are so much attractive than the ones we need?

I've been obsessing about getting new alloy wheels for my van. What I'm eyeing is not expensive but still quite pricey if you consider that the ones in place are doing its job just fine. But you want it and you obsess about it! Yes, it would give the van a makeover in terms of appearance but that's just about it. Then there's that italian made steering wheel. Again, pricey and would not improve the van's performance but, hey, it's still beatiful.

On the other hand, I really have to get one of the three auxilliary fans of the van replaced. It's not even the tenth of the cost of the two things that I've been obsessing about. I can even have it done now! But what's stopping me? I really don't know. There are a lot of reasons that come to mind but one fact is clear, I NEED to do it as soon as possible.

Sige na nga, bukas na lang...

See You Soon, Dad

Please let me share with you the events that happened last week.

I believe we were very blessed since we were all able to say goodbye to my dad the day before his heart failed on him.

Last Wednesday, my Dad was still able to go down to the kitchen of our house to have breakfast. What was noticeable was that he was dragging his right foot already but everyone in the house dismissed it as fatigue. He went back to his room after and everyone noticed that he wasn't his usual self. My sisters then asked him to lie down and take a rest. He slept the whole day. The following morning, my sisters tried waking him up and he wouldn't. That was the time we decided to bring him to the hospital. After all the procedures in the ER of St. Luke's, he was brought to the ICU to be closely observed. That evening, when the doctor saw the CT scan, we were told that my dad had another stroke (his third since 2002) and there was continuous bleeding in the brain. We were asked if we wanted to sign the DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) document and we did. After that, all of us decided to go home and rest for the following day.

Early Friday morning, I called up the nurse assigned to my dad and was surprised to find out that my dad was awake and having conversations with everyone. Calls were placed and everyone rushed to the hospital. When I got there, I was so happy to see that he was, indeed, awake. Everyone's mood changed since Dad, although slurring, was joking around. He
even asked how to get out of the room since he wanted to go home. The doctors arrived and were as surprised to see how he was. He responded very well to the bedside tests given by the doctors. The doctors were suddenly optimistic but reminded us that the next 48 hours were still very critical. We all stayed until the morning visiting hours ended. After that, some
decided to stay in the hospital canteen while I decided to leave first to run some errands and come back at 6 for the next window of the visiting privelages.

We were all light hearted at this point seeing Dad as his usual self, but as I was going through the day what haunted me was the continuous bleeding the doctor saw in the CT scan. At this point, I decided to give the people in the hospital a call to ask how Dad was doing. My sisiter said that they just got a call from the head doctor and to go up to the ICU. Five minutes after that, I got an SMS saying that I should rush to the hospital since Dad had a cardiac failure. I rushed to the hospital and heard what I was fearing most. My sisters, nephews and nieces were all crying and saying their last goodbyes. They made room for me and my wife and whispered our thanks and goodbyes. I found out that the doctor asked permission to resuscitate despite the document for he didn't want to give up on Dad with what he saw that morning. My dad was able to recover but still unconscious. The doctor told us that, again, the next 48 hours were critical. But with we were seeing, we all believed that Dad was breathing his last breathe. We talked among ourselves and agreed to transfer him to a private room so that we could all be with him. No one left and everyone stayed with him. He finally passed at 1:07 in the afternoon. He was 88.

I would treasure that moment when Dad woke up to joke with us for the last time. Everyone was there and was even given a chance to talk baseball to my wife's uncle who was his last visitor. Even Bom, my best friend was able to talk to him on the phone to wish him speedy recovery. I always say that, because of my Dad's age, I was prepared to see him go. But, I believe that no one can be prepared for such a moment.

My Dad was a good and honorable man. He served in the Philippine Airforce for 20 years and retired as a full colonel. He
served in Congress after that as the Executive Secretary of the late Speaker Pepito Laurel and, finally, as a Judge in the Court of Agrarian Relations in Lucena City until he was forced into retirement by his first stroke in 1980.

We laid him to rest last Wednesday and I was so proud that a whole platoon of Airforce men, a brass band and a group of officers were there to give him honor. All of us were standing proud as the guns roared twenty one times as a salute to a fallen comrade. Dad, you were a true officer and a gentleman.

I'd like to thank everyone who came to my dad's wake and shared the grief that we were going through. Please continue to pray with us as we celebrate the full life my dad led.

Judge Antonio O.
