The season didn't start out well. The opening game saw us being beaten by La Salle by more than twenty points. The team being helmed by first time coach in training Chito Narvasa and veteran trainer Cary Sevilla hasn't gelled yet. The first round was forgettable with La Salle sweeping all their other games against Notre Dame, Marist and St. Jude. The team continued its back-to-basics program and started to win other games.
The first game of the second round was against La Salle in their Siopao dome. The team played well but experience of the Opponents still saw them through. We lost by ten. But, number 10, Alan Cruz, was wearing the wrong uniform! Coach Chito places the game under technical protest. The team went on to win the remaining games of the second round. So did La Salle. When it was time to review the protest, the committee awarded the game in favor of the Ateneo. Rubber match! One game championship! The coaching staff scouted the other team and we, in turn practiced the 2-2-1 full court press.
Game time! I couldn't remeber how the rest of the game went but we were behind by seven with 1 minute and 15 seconds to go. Time to execute the 2-2-1 full court press. We stole and at 45 seconds to go we were just behind by 5. I remeber the whole La Salle bench cheering and celebrating already. Again and again and again, the full court press worked! And with a few seconds left, We found ourselves leading by one. The La Salle goes to their sharp shooter Dy. He was fouled with about two seconds left. He sinks in only the second of his free throw. The ball game goes into overtime! The whole La salle bench and their followers are stunned and the Ateneo bench is now celebrating! We went on to win this one with a four point margin!
Animo Ateneo beat La Salle!
